Scaling Digital Onboarding for a European Bank

Unified multiple identity verification providers, automated KYC and KYB risk assessment, and streamlined compliance workflows to help users open bank accounts in under five minutes.

Overview

Worked on the onboarding platform of a European digital bank, building systems that automated identity verification, risk assessment, compliance checks, and regulatory reporting. The primary objective across all projects was reducing the time required for a customer to successfully open a bank account while maintaining regulatory compliance.

Problem

The onboarding process involved multiple external identity providers, country-specific compliance requirements, and manual operational reviews. Every additional verification step introduced friction that could prevent users from completing account creation.

Approach

Designed a unified identity verification layer integrating three different video-identification providers behind a common interface. Worked closely with onboarding agents to understand operational pain points and build tools around real-world workflows. Implemented automated KYC and KYB risk evaluation pipelines that analyzed customer information and determined whether accounts could be approved automatically or required manual review. Built compliance automation for suspicious transaction and account activity reporting across Spain, Germany, and France, reducing operational overhead while ensuring regulatory requirements were met.

Outcomes

  • Unified three identity verification providers into a single onboarding experience.
  • Reduced dependency on manual onboarding reviews through automated KYC and KYB assessments.
  • Enabled automatic risk-based decisions and human escalation only when required.
  • Automated compliance reporting workflows across multiple European markets.
  • Reduced onboarding friction and improved account creation completion rates.
  • Contributed to the company's goal of allowing customers to open bank accounts in under five minutes.
